Florida’s Youth Turkey Hunt Days provide young hunters with an exclusive opportunity to experience the thrill of turkey hunting in the state’s diverse landscapes. Designed to encourage youth participation and ensure the tradition of hunting is passed down to future generations, these special hunts are open to children under 16 years old.
Held annually, the youth hunt days occur before the regular turkey hunting seasons in both Florida’s spring and fall. During these events, young hunters can pursue turkeys under the guidance of an adult mentor, who must be at least 18 years old. Importantly, the mentor cannot shoot, ensuring the youth gets a hands-on experience while receiving the support and safety guidance necessary for a positive outing.
Florida’s wildlife management areas (WMAs) play a pivotal role in these events, with several WMAs offering special youth-only turkey hunts. Hunters must possess the appropriate permits and adhere to bag limits and regulations, which vary depending on the region and season.
These youth hunts are more than just an introduction to hunting; they are a gateway to understanding wildlife conservation and the importance of ethical hunting practices. Through programs like this, Florida continues to foster a love for the outdoors and a respect for its rich natural resources among the next generation.
